Book overview

Hebrew lsraelism, also known as Black Hebrew lsraelism, is a cultural movement that asserts that people of African descent, particularly so- called African, Native, and Hispanic Americans, are the true descendants of the ancient Israelites. This movement emphasizes a collective identity that situates African Americans within the historical and theological narrative of the Hebrew Bible. Hebrew Israelism has gained traction in the United States and various other countries, drawing followers who seek to reclaim a sense of belonging, heritage, and spirituality.

Origins of Hebrew lsraelism

The origins of Hebrew lsraelism can be traced back to the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Two key figures in the development of this movement are William Saunders Crowdy and William S. Crowdy. William Saunders Crowdy, an African American who founded the Church of God and Saints of Christ in 1896, played a pivotal role in popularizing the idea of the "Lost Tribes of Israel" among so-called African Americans. He advocated the belief that African Americans are the descendants of the ancient Israelites who had been scattered to the four corners of the earth throughout history.

Hebrew lsraelism's key beliefs and principles are rooted in the interpretation of biblical texts and historical narratives that reinforce the idea of African descent as integral to the identity of the ancient Israelites. Central to these beliefs and principles are the following:

Identity as Descendants of the Ancient Israelites, Biblical Covenant and Promises, Historical Oppression and Redemption, Cultural and Ethical Practices, Prophetic Fulfillment and Eschatology.

Central Thesis of Hebrew Israelism
